How much does an air con recharge cost?
The cost of an air conditioning recharge depends on the type of refrigerant gas used by your car. The two most common types in the UK are R134A and R1234YF. If your air conditioning system requires R134A gas, the cost to recharge is £64.95. For cars that require R1234YF gas, the cost is £129.95. It's not possible to switch between gases, as the port to recharge R1234YF models is different from the R134A, making it impossible to refill with the incorrect gas.
How do I know which air con gas my car needs?
Vehicles manufactured before 2014 commonly use R134A gas, while all cars with air conditioning manufactured since January 1st, 2017, use the new, environmentally friendly R1234YF gas. Since this date, manufacturers are no longer allowed to use the older R134A air con gas in a bid to reduce global warming, as it's believed to be more damaging to the environment. R1234YF gas was phased in by vehicle manufacturers over time, so cars produced between 2014 and 2016 may require either gas. Does my air con need recharging?
Manufacturers recommend recharging your air con system every two years. Since your car or van air conditioner isn't checked during your MOT test, and regassing isn't typically included in your service, it's essential to include recharging in your regular vehicle maintenance routine. If your AC is blowing warm air or only works intermittently, an AC recharge can bring back cold air when you need it most on hot days, and it can improve your fuel efficiency by reducing strain on the system and engine. Unpleasant smells from the air vents may indicate that your air con needs an air-con debug.
Recharge or No Charge
Air Conditioning Cleaning
If there are unpleasant odours coming from your air vents when you turn on your car's AC, then an air con clean, also known as a debug, may benefit your car. To learn more about this service, please see our Air Conditioning Debug page.
Electric Vehicle Air Conditioning Recharge
Just like cars that run on petrol and diesel, electric vehicles and hybrids also require an air con system recharge when the refrigerant gas in the air con system needs replacing. Otherwise, the air con system in your vehicle won't operate effectively and will start to blow warm air. In fact, proactive maintenance of the air conditioning system is even more important here, as the air con system in electric cars is also used to cool components, including the batteries and electric motors, which can become very hot with extended use.
